It all began in 2009. The Leeds based team behind Mint Club and Mint Warehouse – (who present one of the most forward thinking club nights in the UK – system.) had built a strong relationship with one of the pioneers of modern music Sven Vath, a legend in his own lifetime. Out of this relationship came a big idea.
Create an open-air event under the Cocoon banner in a fabulous location with just one stage that would present the finest Dj’s on the circuit supported by the best sound and the best visual effects and technology money could buy. Music and dancing under the sun (quite often) and under the stars in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside.
This was a shot in the dark, a huge gamble. There was no other event like it in the UK or Europe. No distractions. One stage, one big party that would juggle with your senses.
The artists. Sven Vath has been front and centre throughout. Closing the show every year as only he can, sometimes in driving rain sometimes with a whole bunch of people plucked up from the crowd going bonkers beside him on the massive stage. Every year there has been a brilliant cast to support these goings on.
2009 Steve Bug and Luciano stepped up and set the standard for what was to come. Ricardo Villalobos made his first appearance in 2010 and Loco Dice made the first of 2 electrifying appearances with local lad Adam Shelton notching up his second CITP gig. RV was back again with moustache twirling Seth Troxler in 2011 who played a blinding set. Reboot was there to get it going and this amazing year was followed of course by another. Had to be when in 2012 Cassy and Visionquest were saddled up alongside Dice and Sven. 2013 and Richie Hawtin still remembers the surprise of thousands of black circles erupting from around the stage and covered everyone in the vicinity including Ricardo and Fabric mastermind Craig Richards. Memorable moments and more were to come in 2014 when Seth Troxler returned along with the ever more superb Apollonia. Enzo Siragusa was so good he will be back.
The location. An area of outstanding beauty and a 450 year old country house that gazes down over a natural amphitheatre. At the foot of the long hill a huge stage that seems to sit in the middle of a sea of green. Trees and lush shrubbery surround the performing area. For 6 years, soon 7, the glorious Temple Newsam has been the home of Cocoon in the Park.
The gig. In this setting Cocoon in the Park was always going to be an all around music and visual experience but taken to the next level. Festival specialists Audio-Plus have from the start provided the latest Funktion-One PA giving the truly outstanding sound that has throbbed through every event. The set up is meticulously prepared for Sven and the other vinyl heroes such as Ricardo Villalobos that have so often been guests. You taste and hear the difference every year
Every year Coccon in the Park has been topped up with increasingly brilliant and cutting edge visuals and explosive pyrotechnics, all carefully designed to give the full experience wherever you stand, sit or probably dance on the festival site. And every year the full Cocoon troupe of dancers have strutted their stuff and danced along with you.
Cocoon in the Park has always been an experience, a happening in the north of England that is unique.
